Death By Metaphor

M2RB:  The Beatles

Happiness is a warm gun (Happiness bang, bang, shoot, shoot)
Happiness is a warm gun, mama (Happiness bang, bang, shoot, shoot)
When I hold you in my arms (Oo-oo oh yeah)
And I feel my finger on your trigger (Oo-oo oh yeah)
I know no one can do me no harm (Oo-oo oh yeah)
Because happiness is a warm gun, mama (Happiness bang, bang, shoot, shoot)
Happiness is a warm gun, yes it is (Happiness bang, bang, shoot, shoot)
Happiness is a warm, yes it is, gun (Happiness bang, bang, shoot, shoot)
Well, don't you know happiness is a warm gun, mama? (Happiness is a warm gun, yeah)

Remember when metaphors could kill?   Will Dianne Feinstein and Carolyn Maloney seek to ban clips that hold 100 metaphors?

"The brass knuckles are out, the presumptive Republican nominee is bleeding, and Obama is selling off his likability as if it were an inexhaustible commodity. But is it? Can voters tolerate the lurch from preaching hope and change to mocking Romney's off-key rendition of "America the Beautiful" and hurling contestable allegations that he oversaw the outsourcing of jobs to foreign countries? And even if they do, does Obama's team see a governing path for a reelected president who has so toxically attacked his rival?"

Remember when we had to embrace NuTone© and watch our metaphor usage lest some madman go on another shooting rampage?   Remember when John King, who once exploded while in the anchorchair screaming "I wish I brought a gun to work" after his Magic Screen malfunctioned, apologised on behalf of himself and his network, CNN, which made "Crossfire" and the crosshair logo famous, because his guest used the phrase "in the crosshairs" when discussing the Chicago mayoral race?

“Before we go to break, I want to make a quick point. We were having a discussion about the Chicago mayoral race. My friend, Andy Shaw, used the term ‘in the crosshairs’ in talking about the candidates. We’re trying, we’re trying to get away from that language. Andy is a good friend, he’s covered politics for a long time, but we’re trying to get away from that kind of language.”

- John King, CNN, 18 January 2011

Strolling Down Memory Lane:

Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Beatles

She's not a girl who misses much
Do do do do do do do do, oh yeah
She's well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand
Like a lizard on a window pane
The man in the crowd with the multicoloured mirrors
On his hobnail boots
Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy
Working overtime
A soap impression of his wife which he ate
And donated to the National Trust

Down
I need a fix cos I'm going down
Down to the bits that I left uptown
I need a fix cos I'm going down

Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
